Warriors Are Everywhere, but we need more…

Warriors Are Everywhere, but we need more…

Victoria Soto, 27, a first-grade teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. possessed the Warrior’s Edge.  She was a warrior, unselfishly placing her body between her students, that she ushered into a closet, and the deranged gunman murdering innocent children on Friday, December 14, 2012.

Victoria Soto was one of the six adults, all women, killed that morning, along with twenty children; twelve girls and eight boys.  If not for Soto’s heroic act, and the actions of the other six women killed and those teachers who protected children but didn’t lose their lives, the numbers of those killed would most likely be larger.  Vicki Soto did the right thing. She protected the children in her care.  That is what warriors do.

When we look at horrific events such as this, or natural disasters, we always find those that find courage deep within themselves to help others.  Of course, our first responders – military, police, firemen, emergency personnel rush toward the sound of gunfire and disaster.  Often sacrificing themselves for others.  It is part of the professions warriors serve in.  But we also find others, such as Victoria Soto, who are not employed in warrior professions, but warriors nonetheless.  Many sacrifice, sometimes giving their lives, to help others.  Finding the courage, the wherewithal, the guts, to do the right thing and to serve others is the ultimate expression of living with the warrior’s edge.  Of being a warrior.

So yes, there are warriors everywhere. During every disaster, every tragedy, every horrific event, warriors rise up, warriors like Victoria Soto, they rise up and make a difference.  Everyday, there are people living with the warrior’s edge, doing the right thing, making a positive difference.  They are not always sacrificing their lives or making the news, but they are doing the right thing.

Now is the only time we have.  The past is gone, the future not here yet.  We only have now.  And now is the time we must discover our own Warrior’s Edge.  We must be warriors and do what is right.  We must keep ourselves, our kids, our friends and loved ones safe.  But I suggest we go one further, and we help keep others safe too.  I’m committed to warriorship – to working, writing, speaking and teaching in order to help others be safe.  I’m asking you to join me, in whatever capacity you can.  There are warriors everywhere, but we need more…
