Training in the Martial Arts is Important For Many Reasons

Sunset Nonthing More important quote“Nothing is more important than the cultivation of yourself.”

–  James Altucher

Training in the martial arts is important for many reasons. Depending on your goals, you may train for self-defense, the thrill of competition, exercise, or self-betterment. And while it is difficult to train for all at the same time, often you can train for a couple of these goals simultaneously.

Personally, I now train for self-defense and for self-betterment. I don’t compete any longer, and while you get exercise in classes and while training, it’s not my only exercise and I get my “exercise” through my other physical activities and my martial art training is just icing on the cake when it comes to that goal.

In regards to self-betterment, I believe the martial arts can be a good vehicle for this. However, they are not the only vehicle. To me, living with the warrior’s edge includes the cultivation of yourself, and I believe we should all strive to improve ourselves in many areas. I train to be able to better defend myself, and to better my body, co-ordination, agility, flexibility, commitment, discipline, and all of the other positive traits that come with martial art training. But, as I said, I also engage in other physical activities for my health and fitness. Additionally, I am always reading and studying to learn, improve and make myself better.

There are many ways to cultivate yourself, and you should engage in as many as you can and make yourself the best you can possibly be. Each of us will have different goals and strengths, and it is up to each of us to pursue those and make our selves the best we can be.

Obviously, I spend a lot of time studying and practicing martial arts, self-defense, and living through warrior traits and being the best I can be in these areas for myself, and to teach others. I hope what I share helps others in these areas. But I want you to discover and pursue your passions too. That is what living with the Warrior’s Edge is about. When you have the Warrior’s Edge, you have the edge in life and you take the determination, dedication, and discipline to all the other areas of your life so you can succeed and prosper in them all.

So pursue excellence and be the very best you can be!
