Surviving A Massacre, Rampage, Or Spree Killing

Surviving A Massacre, Rampage, Or Spree Killing by Arthur Cohen contains some very good information to help people stay safe from the deadly rampages that way too often frequent the news these days.  Professor Arthur Cohen is a nationally and internationally known safety expert who teaches programs for The Center for School and Personal Safety Research, a subgroup  of Target Consultants International.  In this book, he divides topics into two parts: Defining the Problem and Formulating a Plan of Action.

In the first part, Cohen addresses the what, who, why and how of spree killings.  He then discusses killings in public places and killings in schools in separate chapters.  He uses many examples and case studies to illustrate his points as he defines the killings.  The book was written in 2010, so some of the most recent killings that have made major news are not included. However, what many surprise people is the number of killings that many people will be unfamiliar with.

The second part of the book contains six chapters.  These address the topics: Understanding Stress and Survival; What It Takes To Survive; Recognizing Danger; Survival Tips, Strategies, and Tactics; Suggestions for the Educational Community; and Suggestions for Law Enforcement.  Some of the information, especially in the last two chapters, is more geared for individuals in positions of administration where policy and procedure changes can be made and then implemented.  Other information, such as the chapter on recognizing danger, should be read by everyone who wishes to stay more safe.

I am using this book as a reference for my own work in this area, and have no difficulty at all in recommending it to anyone who wishes to further educate themselves on the topic of surviving massacres and spree killings.  Especially since there is not that much information out there on this important topic. The knowledge in this book can save people’s lives.

I am currently working on a book in response to Active Shooters.  It should be published in 2013.
