Tai Chi In 10 Weeks by Dr. Aihan Kuhn is promoted on the cover as a “Beginner’s Guide” and as “A proven step-by-step plan for integrating the physical and psychological benefits of tai chi into your life.” And that is just what it is. This is an excellent book for beginners of tai chi, but I’d also say it deserves a spot on the shelf of more practiced tai chi practitioners and instructors too. The book is a very good guide to the fundamentals of tai chi training.
Obviously, learning tai chi from a qualified instructor is best. Dr. Kuhn would not disagree, and even says this book is a good supplement to your live training, and also states that while you can learn a lot from books and DVDs, having an actual qualified instructor will be needed to take your training to the highest levels. With that said, this book provides a lot of information to help the beginner. It can be used by itself to get started, or along with DVDs or live instruction to help learning.
The first part of the book describes what tai chi is, and how it can help you. There is also an explanation of the differences between tai chi and qigong. All of this is important for your foundation before studying. The book covers not just physical movements of tai chi, but psychological, emotional, and spiritual benefits. It provides some of the “why” to train. The book then teaches warm up exercises and basic movements with photographs, which lead into the 24-step Yang Style Tai Chi form. The book concludes with a 10 week plan to learn the basic form which will allow people to progress at their own pace and learning speed.
The explanations and pictures are both clear and easy to follow. I really believe that combining this book along with Dr. Kuhn’s DVDs, or maybe others by Dr. Yang, will help the beginner on their journey into tai chi practice with or without a live instructor. Yes, if you can attend classes with an instructor, do so. But if you can’t, this book will help you learn on your own. I look forward to learning more from Dr. Kuhn, as she has a wealth of information to share.
