Meridian Qigong Exercises: Combining Qigong, Yoga, and Acupressure by Dr. Yang, Jwing-Ming is a short book that contains a morning exercise routine that combines simple yoga stretches, qigong movements, and acupressure techniques designed to relieve energy stagnation and rejuvenate your entire body.
The book has three chapters, which could easily be three parts, or three smaller books. The first contains the meridian qigong exercises. The second contains self-massage techniques. And the third, explains qigong theory.
I like the first part the best, as this series of exercises are simple and can be done lying down or sitting, and are designed to be done first thing upon waking. Some of these I’ve already been doing in my morning routine, but I plan on adding a few more. One can just do the routine as Dr. Yang sets forth, or you can incorporate these into what you are already doing.
The second part that focuses on self-massage explains the how, where, and why of self-massage and it is recommended for right after the earlier exercises if you have time, or at another time during the day or before bed. I have not done much with these tui na and dian xue techniques yet, but am looking at incorporating some of them into my health routine.
Chapter 3, Qigong Theory Review, is a good primer on qigong if you are not familiar with this Chinese practice. It’s just a review, so it is not as in depth as some of Dr. Yang’s other resources, but it does provide a good back ground for the earlier exercises. I’ve just gotten back into studying and practicing qigong, so I liked having this review along with the other two chapters.
Overall, this is a very good book for someone who wants a simple morning qigong routine accompanied by a self-massage tutorial. Everything is explained well with photographs to illustrate techniques and movements.
Dr. Yang is a leading authority on Chinese martial arts and healing arts, and this book is another excellent resource for anyone studying and practicing these fields. If you are looking to add some exercises to your morning routine, or learn about self-massage, I recommend you check out Meridian Qigong Exercises by Dr. Yang.
