Time and attention are the enemies of those who want to break in or burglarize a home. The longer it takes to enter and the more opportunity to be discovered due to light and noise increases the chances of being caught. Make it so your home is not easily and quickly broken into and you have a greater chance that your dwelling with be bypassed as the criminal looks for an easier target.

Here are a few tips to make your home a harder target:

  1. Make your home look occupied. Leave lights on, or on timers when away. Don’t let papers or mail collect outside. Have lawn mowed if you are away for an extended time.
  1. Make your home difficult to break in by installing secure windows and doors that lock. Door hinges should be on the inside. Windows can be pinned for security.
  2. Use your locks! Lock all outside doors and windows before you leave the house or go to bed. (or take a shower, etc.)
  3. Keep your garage door closed and locked, especially if there is an entry way to your house from an attached garage.
  4. Install motion lights near any entry to your home, and make sure you have adequate exterior lighting.
  5. Thorny shrubs can deter someone, but make sure trees and shrubs are trimmed so they can’t be used as hiding places for intruders.
  6. An alarm system can be a good investment. There are many on the market, so shop different companies for the best security system for you.

Remember, good home security is like an onion. There are many layers. These tips are just the tip of the iceberg as to measures you can take to make your home more secure. I’ll be writing more on this topic in the future, but for now, take a look around your home and pretend you are a burglar. Ask your self how you would break in and look for vulnerable areas where you could be attacked.  This simple exercise should open your eyes to areas that may need some attention to make your home more safe from burglary or home invasion.
