Discovering your Warrior’s Edge includes being healthy. Our health is one of the most important things we can protect, because it enables us to do everything else. I encourage everyone to study about health and fitness and to apply what you learn to your life. I just finished reading The Doctors 5 Minute Health Fixes by The Doctors with Mariska van Aalst. Besides learning things, reading the book was also motivating to live a health lifestyle. Check out the review I wrote:
The Doctors 5 Minute Health Fixes by The Doctors with Mariska van Aalst is an entertaining and educational book that is described as “The Prescription for a Lifetime of Great Health.” I found it to be full of practical and simple measures that everyone can take to improve their health. The book is from the Emmy Award winning TV show “The Doctors” that is hosted by ER physician Dr. Travis Stork, obstetrician and gynecologist Dr. Lisa Masterson, board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Andrew Ordon, and pediatrician Dr. James Sears. If you like the show, you’ll like the book. If you’ve never watched the show, but would like some efficient and effective ways to enhance your health and extend your life, you’ll like it too.
I like that this book is by a team of doctors and researchers and presents simple and practical advice, backed by research, on staying healthy and living longer. There are chapters on different aspects of health, and how they are related. Some of the main chapters focus on having a healthy heart, keeping your brain sharp, your lungs and breathing, keeping your digestion system running smoothly, Taking care of your body and the importance of exercise, and so much more. (There are also sections specifically for men, women, pregnancy, and when the baby is born.)
Throughout the book there are sidebars and “extras” that share examples and target questions and issues to help the reader learn to be more healthy. Each chapter also contains multiple “5 Minute Fixes.” These are the simple and effective things that you can do immediately to improve your health. Sure, some will take a lifetime, such as taking a few minutes to pick the right foods or get started exercising, because you will have to continually act on those fixes to gain the best healthy and live healthy longer.
Some of the things in this book may surprise you, especially the statistics that show that the life expectancy of Americans is lower than many less developed countries. I also ask “how is it that the country with the biggest gross domestic product, the country that spends by far the most money on health care, people have much shorter estimated life spans than people in Cuba? Or Libya?”
According to The Doctors, it’s mostly attributable to excess weight. What can you do about it? Follow the 5 minute health fixes in this book and start eating healthy, exercising, and taking care of yourself. Not only will you increase the odds that you will live longer, but you will enjoy those years more too.
I encourage anyone wanting to be healthy and live longer to read this book and act on the simple and effective strategies that can help you create a lifetime of extraordinary health.
